Above are my goals or steps, within the years of high school to college i will put an "x" to those that I've completed to track everything i have accomplished.
I have learned a lot about becoming a chef through "Project Icarus". Sometimes you can't just expect someone to teach you everything. If you want something bad enough, you'll go out on your own time and learn it yourself. Become who you want to be, but first you must learn to depended on yourself. In order to be a good chef you should learn the skills and steps and practice as often as you can. The only way to better yourself is to learn more and want it bad enough.
My Essay:
To me food is more than just a part of survival it is a form of self expression. Many people assume that cooking is just a lazy way of making money but honestly it is one of the most mentally challenging jobs. You require skills that will be the foundation to every recipe. The way you present your dishes will represent your personality and even deeper your life. I believe that the your emotions come through your food, if you feel happy your dishes will be pleasing to both mind and body, if you are upset or mad your dishes will taste salty and bitter. Naturally I am a happy person who has drawn me to a conclusion that i will produce foods that will please those who are willing and ready. But before I even begin cooking in the kitchen I need to know the basic vocabulary, skills and preparation.
The most essential thing to learn about cooking is the vocabulary, of course if you were to step into a professional kitchen and everyone starts throwing you words like "sauté, aromatic and chiffonade" you would be a little disoriented. To sauté something is when you brown something often using butter, oil or another type of fat. An aromatic is a food added to enhance the natural aromas of another food; aromatics include most flavorings; such as herbs and spices, as well as some vegetables. Chiffonade is to finely slice herbs like spinach basil etc. For example when I make my breaded tomato and basil chicken I would Sauté the chicken till its brown on both sides before adding breading to create a crisp skin on both sides to help sear in the natural juices and flavors then I would chiffonade my basil and dice my tomato lastly I would add my aromatics, my dried oregano to bring out the sweetness of the basil and tomatoes.
Now it’s time to learn the most important part of cooking, preparation. When preparing chicken you should rub warm water and salt on it to remove any excess bacteria. When preparing steak you should always keep it at room temperature and you should always wash all vegetables and fruits before cooking.
After you have picked up a few tips on how to prepare foods its best to learn some basic skills like how long you should cook certain foods. I learned that when cooking chicken to get the nice tender and juicy texture you should cook it 15 minutes on one side then flip it to cook it for 10 minutes on the other. When cooking steak if you would want it rare pinch the middle of your thumb and pointer finger it would be the same as the feeling of a rare steak.
This is my basic knowledge of cooking, things I have learned from watching T.V and cooking with other people. What I have wanted to learn more about are the basic skills and requirements you must know before becoming a chef. I know that preparation and vocabulary are important you learn but I want to know I can do to set me apart from other upcoming chefs. Skills that I can learn to show my passion for cooking.
I have learned that, the only way you can set yourself part from everyone is by practicing well with the skills you learn from attending culinary schools or other means of culinary education. By taking classes you not only can earn a diploma saying that you’re a certified chef, you obtain skills that you can use. From reading countless articles about “How to be a Better Chef” they talk a lot about skills and I have come to a conclusion that what they are trying to say learning skills is different from having them. You can be taught to learn how to dice and chop but it is up to you how much you want to further your abilities. Time and quality play a big role in the food industry due to customer satisfaction, but if you put out food that is not quality people will not want to come back again. If you learn how to balance time, quality and skills you will stand out from the rest. Cooking is my passion because it helps me to express myself and to share with others.
